soul train

Soul Train host Don Cornelius was found dead at his Sherman Oaks home this morning. Police say he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. There was no sign of foul play, but police are investigating. According to the Los Angeles Times L.A. Now blog, Cornelius’ “Soul Train” became the longest-running first-run nationally syndicated show in television history, bringing African American music and style to the world for 35 years. When last interviewed by the Times, he was excited about a movie he was developing about "Soul Train." Cornelius stopped hosting the show in 1993, and “Soul Train” ceased production in 2006. SOFIA VERGARA TOPS ASKMEN'S LIST: Sofia Vergara, who plays Gloria on "Modern Family," is No. 1 on AskMen.com's annual "Top 99 Most Desirable Women" list. Vergara won for her "attributes that men want in a companion, such as intelligence, talent, character, and beauty." (Whatever, guys.) How did Vergara respond? "I am so honored to be AskMen's most desired woman this year. A big thank you to all the men who desire me." Who else is on the list? Kate Upton, Rooney Mara, Miranda Kerr and Nicki Minaj round out the top five with Vergara. Surprisingly, Megan Fox barely made the list. She ranked 96th. (Youth and beauty is so fleeting... and so is superficial fame.) Check out the full list.
KRISTEN BELL TEARS UP OVER SLOTH: Kristen Bell loves sloths. Yes, we're talking those furry, three-toed beasts that live in trees and only come down very, very slowly to relieve themselves every once in a while. She loves them so much she told "Ellen" that a surprise sloth from her fiance Dax Shepard on her birthday sent her into crying hysterics. Dax recorded the event on video. Kristen shared the video with Ellen and her audience Tuesday. Kristen was not kidding. She was in tears!

Gisele Bundchen

Gisele Bundchen is getting advice on where to hang out in Indiana, even though she never asked for it. Fox News checked with some locals in Indianapolis, who suggested Gigi ride the nation’s longest temporary zip line, have a grilled cheese at The Slippery Noodle and take a bus around the Indianapolis 500 Speedway track. “People here are really friendly and helpful,” one local said. “So don’t be afraid to ask a local for directions!”
the future Mrs Tom Brady probably thought the cool, long-haired image clinging to her bosom and buttocks that day depicted Pink Floyd’s lead guitarist, or perhaps The Door’s lead singer, freshly-bathed and redolent of Guerlain--but still.
Gisele Bundchen, the world’s highest paid model and champion of “female empowerment” comes across as a genuinely decent person, devoted mom, and sincere philanthropist. Given her childhood in Brazil, her social circles today, and the educational qualities of the mainstream media, expecting her to have a clue about her Bikini icon that day seems unfair if not preposterous. Chris Matthews, after all, admitted that he learned much about the Cuban Revolution from The Godfather II. Time magazine, after all, hailed Che Guevara-- co-founder of a regime that jailed political prisoners at a higher rate than Stalin’s, murdered more of them than pre-war Hitler’s, and craved to ignite a nuclear war-- as “Hero and Icon of the Century” alongside Mother Teresa.
Indeed, on this issue, being a high school dropout probably helped Mrs Brady. Given the tenor of “higher” education nowadays, an Ivy League degree in any of the social “sciences” would have probably made her into a lifetime cheerleader for Che-wear. So I offer the following more as missionary than as heckler:
Many American ladies of Cuban heritage whose husbands, sons and grandkids will be cheering for your husband this Sunday, Mrs Tom Brady, carry horrifying memories of the image on your bikini. These ladies suffered under a totalitarian horror utterly unknown in the Western Hemisphere until introduced by the Stalinist regime co-founded by the subject of your cheeky fashion statement.

john goodman 2012

Goodman talks to the Huffington Post about how he got involved in a film that doesn't have a script. "My agent told me this guy wanted to do something and he showed me -- since they dont have a script, the guy had a scenario, basically scene-by-scene, explaining what was happening."

He continues, "But he tarted it up with all these old Hollywood pictures, pictures of old stars, of old advertisements, of old scenes from Hollywood," he says. "And I thought, This guy is really going through a lot of trouble, he must really dig what he's doing. And then he came to explain to me how he wanted to do it, and I flipped, I thought it was a great idea. It's just a great idea to tell a story."

He also says that he and actor Jean DuJardin (our newest crush) spoke in their own languages while filming (though we don't hear any of it). "There was common ground in that we knew what we were talking about, but there was some heavy focusing going on. Which kind of carried through to this whole ensemble feel of the piece -- everybody was really focused, because it was such a different way of telling a story. It created a great camaraderie among the cast."

He also speaks about death hoaxes on the internet, something he's been a victim of. "Back to doing "Roseanne," when the television show was popular, she was tabloid bait. So I'd read shit about her that was all fiction, and there was a lot of stuff about me that was not true, and what are you going to do? You can't believe any of this s**t, so it was kind of hard to get too worked up about it." When asked if it gets to him, he says, "I don't care. It's so far out of my control, what am I going to do? Bust a blood vessel and really die?" John, you rock.

Ground hog

Chuck tumbled out of his impressive wood cabin — complete with solar panels — at 7:30 a.m. to trumpet calls and chants of his name from a crowd of about 100. This was not the Chuck of 2009, who refused to come out of his house as the mayor offered him some corn for breakfast. When the mayor finally reached inside Chuck’s house and tried to pull him out, he was rewarded with a bite to the index finger.
Having learned his lesson, Bloomberg now wears heavy gloves when handling the critter.
"If I get bit again, I have actually promised my girlfriend I would bite back," Bloomberg warned before the big moment.
But Chuck — or Charles G. Hogg, as he is known in more formal company — was eager to please today. When the door to his cabin opened, Chuck plopped right out and onto the ground. Despite their rocky past, he barely struggled when the mayor picked him up and showed him to the crowd. He didn’t even seem to mind when Bloomberg waved his finger (safely ensconced in the thick glove, of course) in front of Chuck’s little mouth.
And his prediction that an already mild winter would come to an end soon was certainly a crowd-pleaser.
"We thought perhaps we should have Chuck predict when the winter’s going to begin this year," Advance editor Brian Laline, the event’s master of ceremonies, joked.
Emma Boyd, 11, a Blessed Sacrament student, said watching Chuck emerge was exciting — and she liked his prediction.
"I think it was good," she said. "Winter, I’m tired of winter now."
Julia Rimshnick, 5, a PS 29 student, said she thought Chuck was cute, and was excited for spring to come.
"I love spring, because all the flowers come out," she said.
Her brother, Zack, 9, agreed. "I’m happy," he said, about spring coming. "Then we get to go in the pool."
As is often the case, Chuck didn’t agree with another well-known rodent meteorologist, Punxsutawney Phil of Pennsylvania, who predicted six more weeks of winter. But Chuck’s predictions are usually on the money — he’s been right 24 out of the last 30 years, about 80 percent of the time. Assemblyman Matthew Titone took a dig at Chuck’s rival today.
"Put chuck next to Phil, Chuck by far is the better looking groundhog, don’t you think?" Titone asked the crowd.
The process of checking Chuck’s prediction is no joke. In the next two months, the Staten Island Zoo will track how many days are warmer or atypical for the winter — usually, that means how many are warmer than 40 degrees. If more days are warm than cold, Chuck is right.
This year, students from PS 52 will help keep track of the temperatures in the next two months. The PS 52 Chuck Trackers will help hold their furry friend accountable.
William Frew, president of the board of trustees of the Staten Island Zoological Society, said Chuck was very happy everybody came to see him.
"Chuck was in his Academy Award role today," Frew said. "Well-behaved and enjoying the fine weather he’s predicting."
Ken Mitchell, executive director of the Zoo, agreed.
"It was another stellar performance by Chuck, and I’m sure the Giants are looking to Chuck for inspiration," he said.
Deputy Borough President Ed Burke said the annual ritual helps bring attention to the Zoo — which will be featuring some new programs this year.
"Staten Island Chuck’s prediction is good things for the Staten Island Zoo," Burke said. The Zoo — which Bloomberg told the crowd he enjoyed because of how close visitors can get to animals, and how much they can learn from the staff — will open a new outdoor exhibit for its amur leopards soon, Mitchell said. The amur leopard is a critically endangered species, so they are a very rare sight.
Groundhogs, as it turns out, are pretty rare in New York City, too. Mitchell said the Staten Island Zoo is the only one in the city housing true groundhogs.
